Gateway to Freedom: Ernest Bloch's Piano Sonata (1935)-
A Lecture-Recital in honour of the approaching
Anniversary Year (2009) of the composer.
Professor Malcolm Troup’s 2008 lecture casts the spotlight on the somewhat shadowy figure of Ernest Bloch, focussing on the composer’s only Piano Sonata of 1935. The ‘Gateway to Freedom’ was both symbolic and pragmatic, as the composer took his leave of an increasingly hostile European environment to pursue life and the liberty to practise his art in America.
