The Strings of the Oxford Philharmonic
Yuri Zhislin director
Completing our Russian focus this season, the renowned Strings of the Oxford Philharmonic return to Merton College Chapel with a programme exploring three composers all linked by the great St. Petersburg Conservatory. Borodin was committed to promoting a distinctive Russian style of musical language; the famous Nocturne from his second quartet an excellent example of this. Anton Arensky first studied under Rimsky-Korsakov at the Conservatory and his string quartet is an ode to his greatest influence, Tchaikovsky whose joyful Souvenir de Florence pays homage to the sanctuary of his favourite holiday destination.
Concert ends at approx 9.20pm.
