In May, Oxford Philomusica welcomed to Oxford members of the world-famous Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra: the celebrated Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet. They performed as soloists with Oxford Philomusica in a concert at the Sheldonian Theatre and gave classes at the University’s Faculty of Music as part of the programmes we offer the University as their Orchestra in Residence.
On 20th May, we arranged for these supreme musicians to play in a private concert in the resplendent Bridgewater House at St James’ with Marios Papadopoulos on the piano. The programme comprised two works: Mozart’s Piano Quintet K. 452 and Nielsen’s Wind Quintet Op. 43. The performance in the Great Saloon was preceded by a champagne reception in the State Rooms and followed by buffet supper.
Bridgewater House has been described as the largest and most opulent private home in London. It is situated in the heart of St James at 14 Cleveland Row, adjacent to Spencer House and opposite Lancaster House. It is a Grade 1 listed building once owned by Lord Ellesmere, heir of the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater.
