2006 also marks the centenary of the birth
of that towering figure of the Soviet era, Dmitri Shostakovich.
Like Mozart, whom he is known to have admired, Shostakovich was
obliged to pursue his art within the constraints of society.
His impassioned Chamber Symphony ‘In memory of victims of
fascism and war’ is here juxtaposed with Mozart’s
five-day wonder the ‘Linz’ Symphony and the
première of a work by an Oxford graduate composer.
