The sublime Sinfonia Concertante of 1779
was inspired by Mozart’s encounter with the virtuoso
orchestra at Mannheim. The attractive concertante format
has encouraged successive generations of composers, including
the Swedish neo-romantic, Kurt Atterberg, to write works
in emulation. The second half of the concert opens with Robert
Saxton’s birthday greeting to Richard Rodney Bennett and
is completed by the landmark A major Symphony, which for many
epitomises the characteristic poise and perfection of the
classical era.
